In Memory - Andrea Mead Lawrence

Andrea will long remain in our memory and be an inspiring example to us. It was fitting that the Omnibus Public Lands Bill, protecting 2 million acres of land in California as wilderness (over 470,000 acres here in the Eastern Sierra) was signed by President Obama March 30. Andrea knew that the President signed the bill into law before she passed away. This was one of the last of many achievements that Andrea worked so hard to accomplish.

She is a great environmental hero. In addition to being an Olympic champion, winning two gold medals in Alpine skiing, a unique accomplishment, she always fought for the best environmental outcomes and often won. She never gave up on working for what she believed was best, either for her beloved mountains, rivers, or for Mono County, the Town of Mammoth Lakes and the people.

She was a member and a founder of environmental organizations. The Range of Light Group proudly valued her as a member. In recognition of her many accomplishments. The Range of Light Group presented her with our first Lifetime Achievement award and thereafter named the award The Andrea Lawrence Lifetime Achievement Award.

Andrea's memorial is planned for Sunday, April 19, promptly at 6 pm at the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge. Arrive early; doors open at 5:30.

Our Chapter also lost two long-time members in 2008.
