Owens Lake Bird Census

The third annual bird census held on April 18, 2009 showed a dramatic return of migrating birds since the LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) as part of a required dust control project began flooding  sections of the dried up Owens Lake bed in 2001. It is believed that number of all species were up this year. Audubon California this year designated Owens Lake one of the 17 most important birding areas in California.

Rose Valley Aquifer Pumping and Little Lake

The Inyo Board of Supervisors on May 6, 2009, approved allowing the Coso Geothermal plant to pump water for 30 years  (mainly for use in water cooling towers) from the Rose Valley Aquifer. The RoLG representative on Owens Valley water issues (Mark Bagley) along other groups such as CNPS (California Native Plant Society), waterfowl hunters, and business interests have opposed the plan as presently formulated due to its long term effect on the aquifer and on the water level of near by Little Lake thereby impacting negatively both the local flora and fauna.
